Answer
Martin Freeman
In the 2012 film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Martin Freeman plays Bilbo Baggins. The film is the first installment of Peter Jackson’s three-part adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit.
Freeman portrays Bilbo as a comfort-loving hobbit drawn into an expedition to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. The role follows Bilbo’s transformation from reluctant homebody to resourceful adventurer.
The film also features Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield. Those performers are sometimes mistaken for Bilbo because they are central members of the company, but Freeman is the actor in the title role.
