Pandora is a planet in the 2011 video game Borderlands setting.
The game is set on a harsh frontier world where corporations once searched for valuable alien technology and abandoned many workers and settlers. Pandora’s deserts, abandoned facilities, and dangerous wildlife create the setting for the game’s cooperative first-person shooting and role-playing systems. Players choose among four Vault Hunters and pursue the legendary Vault.
Borderlands uses the name Pandora as an ironic frontier label. The world is associated with hidden dangers and consequences, echoing the older expression “opening Pandora’s box,” although the game’s plot is not a direct retelling of the Greek myth. The title’s connection is thematic rather than genealogical.
The original Borderlands was developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K Games. It launched in 2009, despite the question’s frequent association with later franchise entries and releases. Pandora remains a central setting across much of the series, but its locations and story details expand substantially in sequels and spin-offs.
