Pandora is the main setting of the 2009 video game Borderlands. The game places its four playable Vault Hunters on the dangerous, sparsely settled world while they search for a legendary Vault.
Pandora in Borderlands is a science-fiction planet filled with bandits, hostile wildlife, abandoned technology, and competing corporations. Its bleak frontier atmosphere supports the game’s combination of first-person shooting, role-playing systems, and randomly generated equipment.
This version of Pandora is unrelated to the moon in James Cameron’s Avatar and to the woman in Greek mythology. The shared name comes from the long-standing cultural association of Pandora with mystery and dangerous discovery. Later Borderlands games visit other worlds, but the original 2009 title establishes Pandora as the franchise’s foundational setting.
