In the 2009 film Avatar, what species are the blue inhabitants of Pandora?

The story behind the answer

In the 2009 film Avatar, the blue inhabitants of Pandora are the Na’vi.

The Na’vi are a sapient humanoid species native to Pandora, the moon where James Cameron’s film is set. They are physically large, blue-skinned beings with distinctive tails and an intimate spiritual and ecological relationship with their environment. Their communities are organized into clans, each connected to particular places and traditions.

The plot centers on conflict between Na’vi society and human corporations and military forces seeking resources on Pandora. Jake Sully interacts with the Na’vi through an avatar body and becomes involved with the Omaticaya clan, whose home is threatened by mining interests.

The Na’vi are fictional and belong specifically to Avatar’s universe. They should not be confused with extraterrestrial species from other science-fiction franchises. The apostrophe in the name is part of the standard spelling used in the film’s official terminology.
