In the 2009 film Avatar, the moon where humans encounter the Na’vi is Pandora.
James Cameron’s science-fiction film follows Jake Sully, a former Marine who uses a remotely operated avatar body to interact with the Na’vi on Pandora. The moon is portrayed as a biologically interconnected world containing valuable unobtanium and extraordinary ecosystems.
Pandora in Avatar is fictional and is not the same thing as the Pandora of Greek mythology. The film borrows a famous mythological name, but its setting is an astronomical moon orbiting the fictional gas giant Polyphemus.
The film premiered in 2009 and became known for its motion-capture performances, stereoscopic 3D presentation, and environmental themes. Its Pandora is therefore a cinematic world, not a container or a mythological character.
