In the 2009 film Avatar, the human protagonist who becomes a Na’vi avatar is Jake Sully. Sam Worthington plays Jake, a former Marine who takes the place of his deceased twin brother in the Avatar Program.
Jake remotely controls a genetically engineered body made from human and Na’vi DNA. The avatar allows him to interact with Pandora and the Na’vi, initially as part of the human expedition connected with mining unobtanium. His loyalties change as he learns about Na’vi society and the consequences of the operation.
Jake Sully is distinct from his brother Tommy Sully, whose death creates the opening for Jake’s recruitment. He is also not the scientist Norm Spellman, another avatar operator in the film.
