In the 2009 film Avatar, what is Pandora’s native intelligent species called?

The story behind the answer

In the 2009 film Avatar, Pandora’s native intelligent species is called the Na’vi.

Avatar, directed by James Cameron, is set primarily on Pandora, a fictional moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The Na’vi are the moon’s tall, blue-skinned, sentient inhabitants. They live in clans, maintain a spiritual relationship with their environment, and communicate through a constructed language developed for the film.

The film’s Pandora is not the box-bearing figure from Greek mythology. Cameron reused the name for an alien world whose forests, animals, and ecosystems form the setting for the story. This makes Pandora a frequent source of trivia confusion: one meaning belongs to ancient Greek myth, while the other belongs to a science-fiction universe.

Sam Worthington plays Jake Sully, a human who enters a Na’vi avatar body and becomes involved with the Omaticaya clan. Zoe Saldana plays Neytiri, a Na’vi woman who teaches Jake about her people and their world.
