In the 2009 film Avatar, what is Pandora classified as?

The story behind the answer

In the 2009 film Avatar, Pandora is classified as a moon.

Pandora is the fictional habitable moon where most of James Cameron’s Avatar takes place. It orbits the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. The film’s human expedition travels there to extract unobtanium, while the Na’vi live in societies closely connected to Pandora’s ecosystems.

Pandora is often casually called a planet because it functions as the main world of the story. In astronomical terms within the film’s setting, however, it is a moon: a natural satellite orbiting a larger planetary body. This is unrelated to the ancient Greek Pandora and to the asteroid 55 Pandora.

The movie was released in 2009 and became notable for its extensive use of computer-generated imagery, stereoscopic 3D presentation, and fictional ecology. Its setting helped popularize the name Pandora for an imagined extraterrestrial world.
