Yeşim Ustaoğlu directed the 2008 Turkish drama Pandora’s Box.
The film follows three adult siblings who travel to find their elderly mother after she disappears from her home in Turkey’s Black Sea region. Their journey exposes tensions within the family and forces them to confront aging, responsibility, estrangement, and changing social expectations.
Ustaoğlu wrote and directed the film, which stars Tsilla Chelton as the mother, Nusret Çetinel, Derya Durmaz, and Onur Ünsal. Its title evokes the Pandora myth as a metaphor for painful family truths and problems that emerge when hidden matters are opened.
Pandora’s Box won the Golden Shell for best film at the 2008 San Sebastián International Film Festival. It is distinct from Pabst’s 1929 German silent film and from the ancient Greek myth, although all three works use the Pandora name to suggest consequences released into the open.
