In the 2007 video game Assassin's Creed, what is the first name of the protagonist, a Levantine Assassin?

The story behind the answer

The protagonist of the 2007 video game Assassin's Creed is Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad.

Altaïr is a Syrian member of the Assassin Brotherhood during the Third Crusade. The game follows his missions across cities including Masyaf, Acre, Damascus, and Jerusalem. After breaking the Brotherhood's principles during an early mission, he is demoted and must regain his rank by investigating targets linked to the Templar Order.

Altaïr's story is framed through the Animus, a machine that lets Desmond Miles experience ancestral memories. This established the series' recurring blend of historical settings and modern-day science fiction.

Altaïr is sometimes confused with Ezio Auditore, the more prominent protagonist of Assassin's Creed II and its sequels. Altaïr also appears in later series fiction and in Assassin's Creed: Revelations, which connects his life with Ezio's.
