Magdalena is the teenage protagonist whose quinceañera drives the story of the 2006 film Quinceañera.
The film follows Magdalena, a young Latina living in Echo Park, Los Angeles, as her family prepares for her fifteenth-birthday celebration. Her pregnancy creates a conflict with the religious and social expectations surrounding the event, leading her to leave home and seek support from relatives.
Emily Rios played Magdalena in her first major film role. The story also follows Carlos, her gay cousin, and Tía Auntie, whose household becomes an important refuge. Through these characters, the film broadens its focus beyond party preparation to questions of family acceptance, faith, sexuality, housing, and community change.
Magdalena is not a character from the 1987 Mexican telenovela Quinceañera. That earlier series centers on Marisa and Beatriz, making the shared title an easy source of confusion.
