In the 2006 film Quinceañera, the family’s elderly great-granduncle is named Tomas.
Tomas is the older relative whose home becomes important to Magdalena and Carlos after family conflict leaves them without a secure place to stay. His role links the younger characters’ problems to the family’s older generation and traditions.
Chalo González portrays Tomas. The character is not the quinceañera herself: Magdalena is the celebrant, and Carlos is her cousin. Keeping those relationships distinct matters because the film’s plot depends on how different generations respond to pregnancy, sexuality, religion, and family reputation.
Quinceañera was written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. It won the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, making its fictional family story widely known beyond its Los Angeles setting.
