In the 2006 film Quinceañera, the teenager whose upcoming celebration drives the story is Magdalena.
Magdalena, played by Emily Rios, is a 14-year-old Mexican-American girl living in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Her family is preparing for her quinceañera, the traditional celebration associated with a girl’s fifteenth birthday.
The film follows Magdalena as her pregnancy changes her place within her family and community. After being rejected by her father, she moves in with her cousin Carlos and her great-granduncle Tomas. The story explores family expectations, faith, sexuality, and belonging alongside the preparations for the celebration.
Quinceañera was written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. It premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the Dramatic Competition.
