In the 2006 film Quinceañera, Magdalena and Carlos are cousins.
The film follows Magdalena, a teenager in Los Angeles whose pregnancy changes the expected course of her quinceañera. After conflict at home, she stays with her gay cousin Carlos and their great-granduncle Tomas. Their household becomes the emotional center of the story as the characters deal with family expectations, faith, sexuality, and community judgment.
Quinceañera was written and directed by Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland. It premiered at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival, where it received both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the dramatic competition. The film is often discussed as an independent drama that places a familiar coming-of-age ritual alongside broader questions of belonging and chosen family.
Carlos is therefore not Magdalena’s brother or romantic partner. Their cousin relationship is important because the film uses extended family, rather than only the nuclear household, to shape Magdalena’s support system.
