In the 1999 film The Mummy, Rick O’Connell visits Hamunaptra before Imhotep’s curse is unleashed.
Hamunaptra is the fictional City of the Dead where the film’s principal archaeological action takes place. Rick O’Connell, Evelyn Carnahan, and Jonathan Carnahan travel there while competing with an American expedition. Their excavation awakens Imhotep, an ancient high priest whose forbidden relationship with Anck-su-namun led to his mummification and curse.
The film draws on Egyptian imagery, classic monster cinema, and the adventure serial tradition. Its supernatural mythology is invented for entertainment rather than presented as a reliable account of ancient Egyptian religion or archaeology.
The movie was released in 1999, directed by Stephen Sommers, and starred Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, and Arnold Vosloo. Hamunaptra is sometimes confused with real Egyptian cities, but it has no historical location.
