Parry is the name of Robin Williams’s character in the 1991 film The Fisher King.
Directed by Terry Gilliam, The Fisher King follows Parry, a formerly privileged professor who becomes homeless after a personal tragedy. He believes the Holy Grail is hidden in New York and recruits radio shock jock Jack Lucas, played by Jeff Bridges, to help him find it.
The film adapts the Fisher King motif from Grail legend. In medieval stories, a wounded king and a damaged land are connected, and healing requires a meaningful act by a questing hero. Gilliam transfers that pattern to contemporary Manhattan.
The film does not identify Parry as a literal medieval knight. His Grail quest is psychological and symbolic, linking guilt, compassion, friendship, and recovery. Robin Williams received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for the role.
