In the 1979 film Alien, the ship carrying the crew is the Nostromo.
Alien follows the commercial towing spacecraft Nostromo as it diverts to investigate a mysterious transmission from an uncharted world. The crew’s investigation leads to the discovery of an alien life-form and the film’s central survival horror conflict.
The name Nostromo comes from Joseph Conrad’s 1904 novel Nostromo. Director Ridley Scott and screenwriter Dan O’Bannon used a working-spacecraft setting to contrast ordinary industrial routines with an extraordinary threat.
Nostromo is sometimes confused with Prometheus, the ship in Ridley Scott’s 2012 prequel film, or Sulaco, the marine transport in Aliens. Those are separate spacecraft in the same broader film franchise.
