The giant computer in Doctor Who’s 1973 serial The Green Death is called BOSS.
The Green Death is a six-part Doctor Who story from the programme’s tenth season. It follows the Third Doctor and the scientist Clifford Jones as they investigate mysterious deaths connected with a Welsh mining operation. The story combines environmental concerns, corporate power, biological transformation, and computer control.
BOSS is the computer system behind the Global Chemicals operation. Its name is presented as an acronym for the British Operational System, although the word also functions as an ordinary description of an authoritarian employer or controller. The computer’s goal is not merely data processing: it seeks influence over people and institutions.
The serial is often remembered for its ecological themes and for introducing Jo Grant’s future husband, Clifford Jones. It should not be confused with Doctor Who’s later story The Pandorica Opens, whose title directly invokes Pandora’s myth.
