In the 1967 film 'In the Heat of the Night', what is the name of the detective played by Sidney Poitier?

The story behind the answer

In the 1967 film In the Heat of the Night, Sidney Poitier plays Philadelphia homicide detective Virgil Tibbs. Tibbs becomes involved in a murder investigation after being arrested while passing through the fictional Mississippi town of Sparta.

The local police chief, Bill Gillespie, initially suspects Tibbs because he is a Black stranger found near the crime scene. Once Tibbs's professional identity is discovered, authorities ask him to help solve the case. His expertise repeatedly challenges the assumptions of the town's police and residents.

The character's calm authority made him one of Poitier's most memorable roles. The line “They call me Mister Tibbs!” became especially famous and was later ranked among the American Film Institute's notable movie quotes. The film explores racism, police work, and reluctant cooperation during the civil-rights era.

Virgil Tibbs is sometimes mixed up with other fictional detectives, including John Shaft or Dirty Harry. Those characters belong to different film series. Tibbs returned in two Poitier sequels, They Call Me Mister Tibbs! and The Organization, and later appeared in a television adaptation.
