In the 1964 film Goldfinger, Honor Blackman plays the Bond girl Pussy Galore. She is introduced as Auric Goldfinger’s personal pilot and the leader of an all-female flying team called Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus.
Blackman was already known for playing Cathy Gale in the British television series The Avengers, where she performed a confident, physically capable character. That background helped make her convincing as a pilot and martial artist. The filmmakers also shaped Pussy Galore as a formidable opponent for Sean Connery’s James Bond rather than simply a damsel in distress.
Pussy Galore’s name comes from Ian Fleming’s 1959 novel Goldfinger, though her film characterization differs in several details. In the movie, she initially works for Goldfinger but ultimately turns against him, helping undermine his plan to contaminate Fort Knox with nerve gas. A common mix-up is Tiffany Case, another Bond girl from the novels and later film Diamonds Are Forever, while Vesper Lynd belongs to Casino Royale.
