In the 1951 opera The Rake’s Progress, which composer wrote the aria “Here I Stand”?
Answer
Igor Stravinsky
Answer
Igor Stravinsky
Igor Stravinsky wrote the aria “Here I Stand” in the 1951 opera The Rake’s Progress.
The Rake’s Progress is an English-language opera with music by Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky and a libretto by W. H. Auden and Chester Kallman. Its story follows Tom Rakewell, whose reckless choices lead him away from ordinary life and toward ruin. The opera was inspired by the eighteenth-century series of paintings and engravings by William Hogarth.
“Here I Stand” is an aria sung by Anne Trulove near the opera’s conclusion. The work premiered at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice in 1951 and is widely regarded as Stravinsky’s major neoclassical opera.
The opera is sometimes connected to Pandora’s Box only through broader themes of temptation and consequences, not through a direct retelling of the Greek myth. Its title and narrative should not be confused with Pabst’s 1929 film Pandora’s Box or with the ancient story itself.
