In the 1945 atomic bombings, which Japanese city was bombed first?
Answer
Hiroshima
Answer
Hiroshima
Hiroshima was the first Japanese city bombed in the 1945 atomic bombings.
The United States dropped the uranium bomb Little Boy over Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 at about 8:15 a.m. local time. The B-29 bomber Enola Gay carried the weapon, which detonated above the city and caused catastrophic destruction and loss of life.
Hiroshima was a major military and communications center, and it had not suffered the same level of conventional bombing as some other Japanese cities. The bombing became the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare. Three days later, the United States dropped a second atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
The bombings occurred alongside other decisive developments, including the Soviet Union’s declaration of war on Japan on 8 August and its invasion of Japanese-held Manchuria beginning on 9 August. Japan announced acceptance of the Allied terms on 15 August, then signed the formal surrender instrument on 2 September.
