In the 1944 film Double Indemnity, who wrote the screenplay with Billy Wilder?

The story behind the answer

Raymond Chandler wrote the screenplay for Double Indemnity with Billy Wilder.

Released in 1944, Double Indemnity was directed by Wilder and adapted from James M. Cain’s 1936 novella. Wilder brought Chandler, already known for hard-boiled detective fiction, into the screenplay collaboration to help shape the film’s dialogue and noir atmosphere.

The story follows insurance salesman Walter Neff, who becomes involved in a murder-for-insurance scheme with Phyllis Dietrichson. Fred MacMurray played Neff, while Barbara Stanwyck played Phyllis and Edward G. Robinson played claims investigator Barton Keyes.

The film is often treated as a defining example of American film noir. Chandler’s contribution is sometimes confused with the source author: Cain wrote the original novella, while Chandler and Wilder wrote the screenplay. The movie’s first-person voice-over and fatalistic tone helped establish conventions later associated with noir crime films.
