In the 1929 Wall Street Crash, which U.S. city’s stock exchange was located on Wall Street?

The story behind the answer

In the 1929 Wall Street Crash, the stock exchange on Wall Street was located in New York City.

The New York Stock Exchange operated at 11 Wall Street in Manhattan, in the financial district that gave the crash its familiar name. The exchange had become the leading American marketplace for publicly traded securities by the early twentieth century.

The crash unfolded over several dramatic sessions in October 1929, including Black Thursday on October 24, Black Monday on October 28, and Black Tuesday on October 29. Prices had risen rapidly during the 1920s, with extensive margin borrowing helping investors buy shares with borrowed money.

The collapse was a major turning point, but the Great Depression had multiple causes. Banking failures, reduced demand, falling investment, and policy decisions deepened the economic downturn. The crash itself is therefore not identical to the entire depression.
