G. W. Pabst directed the 1929 film Pandora's Box, starring Louise Brooks as Lulu.
The German silent film adapts motifs from Frank Wedekind's stage dramas Earth Spirit and Pandora's Box. Pabst shaped the story into a psychologically charged melodrama about Lulu, whose relationships and sexual independence provoke fascination, jealousy, and tragedy.
Louise Brooks was an American actress and dancer, and the role became the defining performance of her film career. Her bobbed haircut and expressive, restrained acting helped make Lulu one of silent cinema's most recognizable characters.
The film is sometimes confused with later productions sharing the title, including the 2008 Turkish film directed by Yeşim Ustaoğlu. Those are separate works; the 1929 version is Pabst's German silent film.
