Alwa’s surname in the 1929 film Pandora’s Box is Schön.
The character Alwa Schön is the son of Dr. Ludwig Schön, one of the powerful men entangled in Lulu’s life. Alwa is portrayed by Franz Lederer, who was credited internationally as Francis Lederer. The Schön family’s connection to Lulu forms a major part of the film’s social and emotional conflict.
The film adapts characters and situations from Frank Wedekind’s Lulu plays, especially Earth Spirit and Pandora’s Box. It is therefore useful to distinguish the film’s character names from the mythological names associated with Hesiod’s Pandora. Lulu is not Pandora, and Alwa Schön is not a figure from ancient Greek mythology.
Some references use diacritics inconsistently when discussing German names, but “Schön” is the standard spelling. The name is also easy to confuse with Schigolch, another important character in the film and a different person in Lulu’s circle.
