In Suzanne Collins's dystopian novel The Hunger Games, what is Katniss Everdeen's younger sister's name?

The story behind the answer

In The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen’s younger sister is Primrose Everdeen.

Primrose, usually called Prim, is the person Katniss cares about most. At the reaping in District 12, Prim’s name is selected for the 74th Hunger Games. Katniss immediately volunteers to take her place, creating the story’s central sacrifice and sending Katniss to the Capitol.

Prim is described as gentle and talented in healing, while Katniss is a skilled hunter who has supported the family since their father’s death. Their relationship explains why Katniss repeatedly risks her life and challenges the Capitol’s authority.

Readers sometimes confuse Prim with Rue, the young tribute from District 11 who becomes Katniss’s ally in the arena. Prim never competes in the Games in the first novel, but her fate remains important throughout the trilogy.
