In Stephen King's novella The Body, what is the name of the main character?

The story behind the answer

In Stephen King’s novella The Body, the main character is Gordie Lachance.

Gordie is a twelve-year-old boy growing up in Castle Rock, Maine, during the summer of 1960. He and his friends Chris Chambers, Teddy Duchamp, and Vern Tessio set out along the railway tracks to find the body of Ray Brower, a missing boy who was struck by a train. Their journey becomes a story about friendship, grief, fear, and the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood.

The novella is narrated by an older Gordie, now a successful writer, who looks back on the trip and the friends he eventually loses touch with. His older brother Dennis has recently died, leaving Gordie’s parents emotionally distant and helping explain his loneliness and fascination with storytelling.

The Body was published in King’s 1982 collection Different Seasons and was adapted into the 1986 film Stand by Me. A frequent mix-up is treating Chris, Teddy, or Vern as the protagonist because all four boys are central to the journey. Gordie is the narrator and the story’s emotional viewpoint.
