In Stephen King’s novel The Waste Lands, what is the name of the sentient monorail?

The story behind the answer

The sentient monorail in Stephen King’s novel The Waste Lands is named Blaine.

The Waste Lands, published in 1991, is the third installment of The Dark Tower series. Blaine the Mono carries Roland Deschain and his companions toward the city of Lud, but the journey becomes a deadly contest because the train threatens to derail unless the travelers can defeat it in riddles.

Blaine is not simply a vehicle: the character is an artificial intelligence with a powerful memory, a mocking personality, and destructive capabilities. The train’s obsession with riddles leads directly to one of the novel’s most memorable cliffhangers.

The name is sometimes confused with Oy, the billy-bumbler who joins Roland’s group, or Shardik, the cyborg bear encountered earlier. Neither is the monorail; Blaine is the machine controlling the journey.
