In Stephen King’s novel The Outsider, the detective investigating Frank Peterson’s murder is Ralph Anderson.
Ralph Anderson is a police detective in Flint City, Oklahoma. He initially arrests coach and teacher Terry Maitland after evidence appears to place Maitland at the crime scene. The case becomes extraordinary when other evidence shows that Maitland was elsewhere at the same time.
The investigation expands beyond an ordinary murder inquiry as Ralph works with Holly Gibney and confronts an apparently supernatural explanation. The novel explores how witnesses, forensic evidence, and official certainty can conflict.
The title is sometimes confused with the identity of the suspected killer. “The Outsider” refers to the supernatural antagonist, while Ralph Anderson is the investigator whose viewpoint anchors much of the story.
