In Stephen King’s novel The Green Mile, the prison guard who narrates the story is named Paul Edgecombe.
Paul works on E Block, the death row section of Cold Mountain Penitentiary, during the 1930s. His narration presents the events as memories from old age, giving the novel a reflective frame and making his later understanding of John Coffey especially important.
The name can be confused with other major characters. John Coffey is the exceptionally large inmate with healing powers, while Percy Wetmore is the cruel and inexperienced guard whose actions cause repeated trouble. Paul is the responsible guard who supervises the cellblock and becomes one of Coffey’s few supporters.
The novel originally appeared as six separate paperback installments in 1996. It was later collected as a single volume, and Frank Darabont directed the 1999 film adaptation, in which Tom Hanks played Paul Edgecomb.
