In Stephen King’s novel Misery, what is the name of the nurse who rescues Paul Sheldon?

The story behind the answer

In Stephen King’s novel Misery, the nurse who rescues Paul Sheldon is Annie Wilkes.

Annie Wilkes finds the injured novelist after a car accident and takes him to her remote home. She describes herself as Paul’s number-one fan, but her admiration becomes threatening when she discovers that he has killed off Misery Chastain, the heroine of his popular romance novels.

Paul is unable to leave because his injuries are severe and Annie controls his medication, movement, and communication with the outside world. She forces him to write a new Misery novel according to her demands. The conflict therefore combines physical captivity with psychological coercion and the power imbalance between author and reader.

Annie is one of King’s most famous non-supernatural villains. Unlike many King antagonists, she does not require paranormal powers to create terror. The novel was published in 1987 and later adapted into a 1990 film starring Kathy Bates, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
