Abra Stone possesses an exceptionally powerful form of the psychic ability known as “the shining.” Her mental connection with Danny Torrance brings her into conflict with the True Knot, a traveling group that feeds on the psychic essence called steam.
Danny, now an adult and struggling with alcoholism, becomes Abra’s protector and mentor. His relationship with her also connects Doctor Sleep directly to The Shining, while allowing the sequel to focus on recovery, responsibility, and the consequences of inherited trauma.
Doctor Sleep was published in 2013. Abra’s surname is Stone, not Torrance, because she is not a member of Danny’s immediate family. The character is sometimes described simply as “the girl with the shining,” but her full canonical name is Abra Stone.
