In StarCraft, the Terran worker unit that gathers minerals and builds structures is the SCV.
SCV stands for Space Construction Vehicle. It is the basic Terran worker, comparable to the Protoss Probe and Zerg Drone. Players use SCVs to mine minerals, harvest Vespene gas, construct Terran buildings, and repair mechanical units and structures.
Unlike Protoss buildings, which a Probe places and then leaves to warp in, Terran structures are constructed directly by SCVs. An SCV must remain assigned to a building until construction is complete, although several SCVs can accelerate construction. This makes worker preservation and repair especially important in Terran play.
SCVs can also fight, but their low combat strength means they are normally protected by military units. The name is sometimes written in all capitals because it is an acronym, rather than a personal unit name.
