Shakuras is the refuge and homeworld of the Dark Templar in StarCraft: Brood War.
After the Zerg overrun Aiur, Protoss survivors flee with the Dark Templar to Shakuras. The Brood War campaign explores the uneasy cooperation between these groups, who had been separated by ancient political and religious divisions. Their alliance becomes necessary as they face the Zerg and the United Earth Directorate.
Shakuras is ruled by the Dark Templar matriarch Raszagal, while Artanis and other Aiur Protoss represent the displaced traditional leadership. The planet therefore becomes both a physical refuge and a setting for reconciliation within Protoss society.
Aiur is the ancestral Protoss homeworld, not the Dark Templar refuge introduced in Brood War. The two worlds are closely connected in the story, which is why they are frequently mixed up. Shakuras also appears in later StarCraft II events and remains important to Protoss history.
