In Star Wars: TIE Fighter, players serve which faction?

The story behind the answer

In Star Wars: TIE Fighter, players serve which faction? They serve the Galactic Empire.

Star Wars: TIE Fighter places the player in the cockpit of an Imperial starfighter serving the Galactic Empire. Unlike the earlier X-Wing, which cast players as Rebel pilots, this 1994 simulator deliberately tells its story from the Empire’s side.

The campaign begins shortly after the Empire’s victory at Hoth, between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Missions include dogfighting, escorting vessels, inspecting ships and defending Imperial interests. Players earn promotions and medals by completing primary, secondary and secret objectives across multiple tours of duty.

The game complicates the usual heroes-versus-villains perspective by presenting Imperial forces as an organized power claiming to preserve order. The player often works under the strategic direction of Thrawn and confronts pirates, rebels and Imperial traitors. That narrative framing can cause confusion, but the faction itself is unambiguous: the player is an Imperial pilot serving the Galactic Empire.
