In some of Pablo Picasso's work, he used what method of attaching paper to canvas?

The story behind the answer

In some of Pablo Picasso’s work, he used collage to attach paper and other real-world materials to a canvas.

Picasso helped make collage a major modern-art technique during the development of Synthetic Cubism. Instead of representing every object with paint, artists could paste fragments of newspaper, wallpaper, printed paper, or fabric directly into a composition. The physical material became part of the image.

A landmark example is Picasso’s 1912 Still Life with Chair Caning. He combined oil paint with printed oilcloth imitating chair caning, then framed the oval work with rope. The piece is often described as the first Cubist collage, although Georges Braque was also developing closely related pasted-paper works at the same time.

A related term is papier collé, French for “pasted paper.” It refers specifically to paper pasted onto a flat support, while collage is the broader category and may include fabric, photographs, oilcloth, or other materials. For this quiz question, however, the canonical answer is simply “collage.”
