In Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, what is the name of the hall where Odin’s warriors feast?

The story behind the answer

In Snorri Sturluson’s Prose Edda, the hall where Odin’s chosen warriors feast is Valhalla.

Valhalla, or Valhöll in Old Norse, is described as Odin’s great hall in Asgard. Warriors who die bravely in battle are brought there by valkyries. They become the einherjar, who fight during the day and feast at night while preparing for the final conflict of Ragnarök.

Snorri describes the hall as having many doors and a roof associated with shields. The warriors eat the boar Sæhrímnir, which is restored each day, and drink mead associated with the goat Heiðrún. These details come from Snorri’s retelling of earlier mythological material.

Valhalla is not the only destination for the battle-dead. The goddess Freyja is said to receive half of those slain, bringing them to her field, Fólkvangr.
