In snooker, what is the value of the blue ball?

The story behind the answer

In snooker, the blue ball is worth five points.

The blue is the middle-valued colour in the standard scoring system. It is worth more than yellow, green and brown, but less than pink and black. During the reds-and-colours phase, a player may choose the blue after potting a red when the position makes it the best scoring option.

The blue has a distinctive fixed location: it is placed on the centre spot of the table. The pink sits between the blue and the triangle of reds, while the black is closest to the top cushion.

Once all reds are gone, the colours must be potted in ascending order: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. The blue therefore comes fourth in the colours-only clearance and contributes five points when legally potted.
