Answer
Winning on the black
Answer
Winning on the black
In snooker, potting the final black to win a frame is called winning on the black.
The phrase describes a close frame in which the black is the last ball required and its seven points give one player an unassailable lead. It is especially common in commentary because a black can be decisive even when the preceding scoring has been tightly balanced.
In the colours phase, the balls must be played in order from yellow through black. Once the final black is legally potted, the frame ends unless the scores are tied and the rules require a re-spotted black. A player does not need to pot every ball on the table to win.
“Winning on the black” differs from “a black-ball finish” in casual usage, although both may describe a frame decided by that ball. It also differs from a maximum break, which requires a complete scoring clearance beginning with the reds.
