In snooker, what is the term for a break of 147 points?
Answer
A maximum break
Answer
A maximum break
In snooker, a break of 147 points is called a maximum break.
The standard route to 147 consists of potting all 15 reds, each followed by a black, for 120 points, and then clearing the six colours in order for another 27. The total is therefore 147 points. This sequence is also commonly called a maximum or a 147.
A maximum is a type of total clearance, but the terms are not interchangeable. A player may clear the table while scoring fewer than 147 if a different colour is chosen after a red, or if the required ideal sequence is not completed.
The record maximum break remains one of snooker’s best-known statistical achievements. It requires accurate potting, precise position play and control of the cue ball throughout a long uninterrupted visit. The previously listed fastest officially recognised maximum is a separate speed record.
