In snooker, what is a break of 100 or more points called?

The story behind the answer

In snooker, a break of 100 or more points is called a century break.

A break is the sequence of points a player scores during one visit to the table before missing, fouling or otherwise ending the turn. When that sequence reaches at least 100 points, it is recorded as a century. Players and commentators often use “making a century” as shorthand for achieving one.

Century breaks are important indicators of scoring consistency, but they are not the same as maximum breaks. A standard maximum break is 147 points, produced by potting 15 reds with blacks and then clearing the colours. A century can be any total from 100 upward, including totals above 147 in unusual free-ball circumstances.

The term also appears in career records, where players are credited with the number of centuries they have made in professional competition. Those totals are separate from a player’s number of tournament wins.
