Victor Trevor’s father in Sherlock Holmes’s “The Adventure of the Gloria Scott” was James Armitage.
The story was first published in 1893 in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. It is presented as one of Holmes’s earliest cases, recalled by Dr Watson after Holmes visits the home of his university friend Victor Trevor. Trevor’s father, a respected country gentleman, becomes distressed when an old message exposes a secret from his past.
That secret is connected to the ship Gloria Scott and a mutiny involving transported convicts. The earlier events explain the father’s fear and the significance of a cryptic message delivered many years later. The story therefore gives readers a glimpse of Holmes before his professional partnership with Watson had fully developed.
The name is often overlooked because Victor Trevor and the ship’s history receive more attention. James Armitage is the father’s original identity; later events lead to his life in England under the Trevor name.
