In Sherlock Holmes stories, what is the name of the Baskerville family’s estate in Devon?

The story behind the answer

In The Hound of the Baskervilles, the Baskerville family estate in Devon is called Baskerville Hall.

The novel was first published in instalments in The Strand Magazine from 1901 to 1902 and appeared in book form in 1902. Its plot concerns the death of Sir Charles Baskerville and the succession of his heir, Sir Henry Baskerville. A family legend claims that a supernatural hound has hunted the Baskervilles since the time of Sir Hugo Baskerville.

Baskerville Hall is the ancestral home to which Sir Henry returns. Dr Watson travels to Devon with him and investigates the moor while Holmes initially remains in London. Holmes later reveals that he has secretly been nearby, observing events and gathering evidence.

The estate should not be confused with Baskerville Hall in real-world literary tourism, where several locations have been proposed as inspirations. The novel’s Devon landscape, Grimpen Mire, and the old family house are fictional settings within Conan Doyle’s story.
