In the Sherlock Holmes stories, Holmes’s landlady at 221B Baker Street is Mrs Hudson.
Mrs Hudson manages the Baker Street rooms shared by Holmes and Dr John Watson. She is usually described as a practical, respectable woman who tolerates Holmes’s unusual experiments, untidy habits, late-night visitors and occasional dangerous investigations. Although she is not usually the central mystery-solver, her household role makes her a recurring presence throughout the canon.
Arthur Conan Doyle gives Mrs Hudson relatively little personal biography, so details about her first name, age and precise background are not firmly established in the original stories. Later films, television series and stage productions often expand her character or alter her personality, which can cause confusion between adaptations and Doyle’s text.
Mrs Hudson should not be confused with Mrs Turner, who is mentioned in connection with Baker Street domestic arrangements in some stories. The address 221B Baker Street is Holmes’s famous London residence, but the question of who owns the building has also been handled differently by later adaptations.
