In Sherlock Holmes stories, what is the name of Holmes’s elder brother?

The story behind the answer

In the Sherlock Holmes stories, Holmes’s elder brother is Mycroft Holmes.

Mycroft is introduced in “The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans,” first published in 1908. He is seven years older than Sherlock and works as a government official, although his exact department is not specified. Mycroft possesses exceptional powers of observation and deduction, often exceeding Sherlock’s in purely intellectual matters.

Unlike his younger brother, Mycroft rarely investigates in the field. He prefers sitting at the Diogenes Club, a fictional London club whose members are expected not to speak to one another. Sherlock describes Mycroft as the British government’s most useful man because he can solve administrative problems without leaving his chair.

Mycroft is sometimes confused with Professor Moriarty, Sherlock’s principal criminal adversary. Moriarty is a mathematical genius and mastermind of crime; Mycroft is Sherlock’s highly intelligent, law-abiding brother. Mycroft appears in several original stories and has become a recurring character in later adaptations.
