In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, what title does Macbeth receive after defeating the rebels?
Answer
Thane of Cawdor
Answer
Thane of Cawdor
In Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Macbeth receives the title Thane of Cawdor after defeating the rebels.
At the start of the tragedy, three witches greet Macbeth with three titles: Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and future king. Macbeth already holds the first title, but he does not yet know that the second has been awarded to him. King Duncan orders the former Thane of Cawdor executed for treason and transfers the title to Macbeth.
The prophecy’s first two parts quickly come true, encouraging Macbeth to believe that he will also become king. He and Lady Macbeth then begin plotting against Duncan, who visits their castle. Macbeth murders Duncan and takes the crown, beginning his violent rule.
The title is not Macbeth’s final rank. He becomes king of Scotland, while Thane of Fife is associated with Macduff. The witches’ predictions influence Macbeth, but the play also stresses his responsibility for his choices.
