In Rocky, Rocky Balboa shouts, “Yo, Adrian!” after winning his championship fight.
Rocky is focused less on defeating Apollo Creed than on lasting the full 15 rounds, because he believes doing so will prove he belongs in the ring. When the decision is announced, he calls for Adrian Pennino, his girlfriend and emotional support throughout the film.
The line is sometimes quoted simply as “Adrian!” or confused with Rocky’s earlier declarations of love. The distinctive “Yo” reflects Rocky’s speech and became closely associated with both the character and Philadelphia popular culture.
Rocky was released in 1976, written by and starring Sylvester Stallone. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture and launched a major film franchise.
