Rio de Janeiro’s famous New Year’s Eve fireworks are traditionally held at Copacabana Beach.
The celebration attracts enormous crowds along Rio’s Atlantic waterfront, with Copacabana serving as the principal setting for the midnight spectacle. Fireworks are typically launched from barges positioned offshore, allowing the display to be viewed from the long beach and its promenade.
The event combines fireworks, music, concerts, and celebrations associated with Réveillon, the Portuguese term commonly used for New Year’s Eve festivities. Many attendees wear white, a custom often connected with hopes for peace and good fortune, while some participants also make offerings or observe traditions associated with Afro-Brazilian religions.
Copacabana is one of Rio’s most recognizable neighborhoods and beaches. Ipanema is another famous Rio beach, but it is not the standard answer for the city’s main New Year fireworks location.
