In Pokémon X and Y, which new Pokémon type was introduced to the series?

The story behind the answer

In Pokémon X and Y, the new Pokémon type introduced to the series was Fairy.

Pokémon X and Y, released worldwide for Nintendo 3DS in October 2013, marked the start of the franchise’s sixth generation. Alongside 72 new Pokémon, the games added the Fairy type to the battle system. It was the first new type introduced since Gold and Silver added Dark and Steel in 1999.

Fairy was designed partly to improve battle balance. Before its arrival, Dragon-type Pokémon had relatively few weaknesses, while Fairy gave players a new way to challenge them. Fairy-type moves are especially effective against Dragon, Fighting, and Dark Pokémon, while Fairy Pokémon are vulnerable to Poison and Steel attacks.

A common mix-up is confusing Fairy’s video-game debut with its later appearances in other media. The type first appeared in the main games Pokémon X and Y, although existing Pokémon such as Jigglypuff, Marill, and Mawile were later reclassified as partly or entirely Fairy-type. The games also introduced Mega Evolution and fully polygonal 3D environments.
